The Lobito Corridor

The Lobito Corridor is a multimodal route that combines roads, ports, airports and the historic Benguela railway line. This vital infrastructure links the port of Lobito, on Angola's Atlantic coast, to the mineral-rich regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia. This corridor plays a key role in the transportation of goods and passengers, contributing to trade and regional economic development.

A Road to Reconstruction and Development

The Lobito Corridor, located in Angola, represents one of the most ambitious infrastructure initiatives in southern Africa. With a significant impact on the country’s economic and social recovery after decades of civil war, this strategic infrastructure connects Angola to neighboring regions, boosting trade and regional integration.

What is the Lobito Corridor?

The Lobito Corridor is a multimodal route that combines roads, ports, airports and the historic Benguela railway line. This vital infrastructure links the port of Lobito, on Angola’s Atlantic coast, to the mineral-rich regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia. This corridor plays a key role in the transportation of goods and passengers, contributing to trade and regional economic development.

The History of the Benguela Railway

Construction of the Benguela Railway, one of the main components of the Lobito Corridor, began in 1902 and was completed in 1929. The line was designed to transport minerals from the regions of Katanga (DRC) and Zambia’s copper belt to the port of Lobito. However, the infrastructure became inoperable between 1975 and 2013 due to armed conflicts. With Chinese support, the line was rebuilt, modernizing more than 70 railway stations and warehouses, marking a new era of connectivity.

Progress in rebuilding the Lobito Corridor

Since the end of the civil war in 2002, Angola has prioritized investment in the Lobito Corridor as a key part of its development strategy. Some of the most significant advances include:

  • Rehabilitation of the Port of Lobito: The port has been modernized with specialized terminals for containers, minerals and oil, increasing its capacity to handle up to 4.1 million tons of cargo annually.
  • Improved Road Infrastructure: Roads along the corridor have been renovated, improving links between communities and facilitating trade.
  • Catumbela International Airport: This airport has become essential for regional logistics, complementing maritime and land transportation.

These advances have positioned the corridor as an indispensable infrastructure for the economic and social development of the region.

Social and economic impacts

The Lobito Corridor is transforming not only Angola, but also neighboring countries, by generating impact in various areas:

  • Regional Connectivity: The route strengthens trade links between Angola, the DRC and Zambia, enabling the efficient transportation of minerals and essential goods.
  • Job Creation: The projects associated with the corridor create direct and indirect jobs, helping to reduce unemployment.
  • Improved Community Life: Trade centers have sprung up along the corridor, promoting economic integration between rural and urban areas and offering new opportunities for small entrepreneurs.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the advances, the Lobito Corridor faces important challenges:

  • Incomplete Infrastructure: Significant stretches of road and rail still need to be completed to maximize their potential.
  • Maintenance and Safety: The lack of regulation and proper maintenance undermines confidence in transportation and safety along the corridor.
  • Rural Connectivity: The expansion of secondary transportation networks is necessary to integrate rural communities and improve accessibility.

The Angolan government, in partnership with international investors, continues to work to overcome these challenges, ensuring that the corridor can unlock its full potential.

Joe Biden’s visit and the role of the United States

President Joe Biden’s recent visit to Angola, from December 2 to 4, 2024, underlined the strategic importance of the Lobito Corridor. Biden announced additional investment for the construction of 800 kilometers of rail and the renovation of the 1,300 already in place, reducing transport times from 45 days to less than a week.

In addition, the US has mobilized almost five million dollars in the last 18 months to support rail infrastructure and clean energy projects related to the corridor. These efforts aim to strengthen supply chains, foster sustainable economic growth and strengthen digital connectivity along the route.

The Lobito Corridor is proof of Angola’s commitment to using infrastructure as an engine for sustainable development. With continued support from international partners, such as the US, and efficient management, the corridor promises to transform a model of regional cooperation and economic progress.
